Pass Plus was developed by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) in partnership with the driving instruction and insurance industries. It is designed to help newly qualified drivers gain valuable driving experience more quickly and continue developing as safe, confident and responsible drivers.

The course is typically aimed at drivers who have passed their practical driving test within the previous 12 months. However, there is no upper age limit, making Pass Plus suitable for newly qualified drivers of all ages.

What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a practical post-test training course consisting of six modules. Each module has been designed to further develop your driving skills and help you become a safer, more confident and more capable driver on UK roads in a wide variety of lighting, weather and traffic conditions.

Many newly qualified drivers quickly realise that, although they have passed their driving test, there are still types of driving they have had little opportunity to experience. Pass Plus bridges that gap by allowing you to continue learning with an experienced driving instructor sitting alongside you.

Upon successfully completing the Pass Plus syllabus, the DVSA will issue your Pass Plus certificate.

The six Pass Plus modules are:

• Module 1 - Introduction and town driving
• Module 2 - All-weather driving
• Module 3 - Out of town driving and rural roads
• Module 4 - Night driving
• Module 5 - Dual carriageways
• Module 6 - Motorways

Modules 1 and 2 must be completed first. Once these have been covered, the remaining modules can be completed in any order and, where appropriate, combined within the same lesson.

Why I Recommend Pass Plus

As a driving instructor, I always tell my pupils that learning to drive isn't just about passing the driving test. It's about becoming a safe, confident and independent driver.

Your driving lessons are designed to prepare you to pass your practical driving test safely, but they're also there to prepare you for the years of driving that follow. The reality is that there simply isn't enough time during learner training to experience every type of road, traffic condition and real-world driving situation you'll encounter once you're driving independently.

Pass Plus gives you the opportunity to continue learning without the pressure of a driving test. Instead, the emphasis is on gaining valuable experience, increasing your confidence and developing the skills needed to deal with unfamiliar roads and traffic conditions safely.

My aim isn't just to help you complete the Pass Plus syllabus. It's to help you become and feel safer, more confident and better prepared for a lifetime of driving.

How Long Does Pass Plus Take?

The DVSA states that a minimum of six hours of practical training is required to complete Pass Plus.

How much training you need beyond those six hours depends very much on you. Every newly qualified driver progresses at a different pace, and the time required will depend on your confidence, previous experience and how quickly you demonstrate the required standard across each module.

The routes you choose can also influence how long the course takes.

Tailoring Pass Plus to Local Roads

One of the biggest advantages of completing Pass Plus with a local driving instructor is being able to tailor the training around roads and driving environments that are genuinely relevant to you.

Peterborough offers excellent opportunities for Pass Plus training. The nearby A1(M) motorway is ideal for gaining valuable motorway driving experience, while a longer lesson can also include dual carriageway and town driving by travelling to and through Cambridge. This gives you the opportunity to experience heavier traffic, larger roundabouts, more complex junctions and unfamiliar road layouts, all while benefiting from the guidance and reassurance of an experienced driving instructor.

Module 3, covering out-of-town and rural roads, can be particularly beneficial for newly qualified drivers.

Peterborough sits on the edge of the Fens, where much of the driving is on relatively flat roads. For many learner drivers, roads with significant hills, sharp bends and changing gradients are something they have had relatively little experience of.

By travelling west towards Northamptonshire, Rutland or Leicestershire, Pass Plus provides an excellent opportunity to experience more varied rural roads, including hills, bends, changing road conditions and different speed limits.

How Much Does Pass Plus Cost?

The cost of Pass Plus depends on the amount of training you choose to complete.

The DVSA recommends a minimum of six hours of practical training, although some drivers choose additional tuition to gain further experience in areas such as motorway driving, rural roads or night driving.

Is There a Test at the End?

No. Unlike your practical driving test, there is no separate Pass Plus test.

Instead, you'll be assessed throughout the course while completing each of the six modules.

To successfully complete Pass Plus, you must demonstrate the required standard in every module.

There are two levels of achievement:

• Achieved (A) - You have met the required standard.
• Exceeded (E) - You have exceeded the required standard.

How Do I Receive My Pass Plus Certificate?

Once you've successfully completed all six modules and achieved at least the required standard, I'll submit your Pass Plus training report to the DVSA.

The DVSA Pass Plus team will then issue your Pass Plus certificate and send it directly to you by post.

Pass Plus or a Confidence Builder Course?

Pass Plus is an excellent option for many newly qualified drivers, but it isn't the only way to build confidence behind the wheel.
