Getting started

How old do I need to be to start driving lessons?

You can start driving lessons on public roads from the age of 17. You can apply for your provisional driving licence on GOV.UK from 15 years and 9 months, so it's worth applying early and having it ready in time. You'll need your provisional licence before your first lesson.

Do I need to pass my theory test before I start lessons?

No, you can start driving lessons as soon as you have your provisional licence. Plenty of my pupils start lessons before they've passed their theory test. Everyone is different, but I find it works really well. During lessons I'll ask you questions about what we see on the road, such as traffic signs and road markings, so your theory revision becomes real rather than just memorising answers.

You must pass your theory test before you can book your practical driving test, so I recommend starting your revision early. All my pupils get free access to the LDC Theory Test app and my online learning hub, which cover both the multiple-choice questions and the hazard perception test. Your theory test pass certificate is valid for two years, so you'll need to pass your practical test within that time.

I keep a copy of The Highway Code in my glovebox and often refer to it during lessons. I strongly recommend buying your own copy. It's the best way to learn the rules of the road, and it's essential for your theory test.

Can I meet you before I book?

Yes. I offer a free, no-obligation home visit, and parents or other family members are very welcome to join. It usually takes about 30 minutes and gives you the chance to meet me, ask any questions and talk through which lessons or courses would suit you best. To arrange a visit, call, text or WhatsApp me on 07778 894744.

What do I need to bring to my first lesson?

Please bring your provisional driving licence, because I need to see it before we can drive. If you need glasses or contact lenses for driving, make sure you wear them.

Before your first lesson, you'll also need to send me a licence check code from GOV.UK, so I can check your licence details. My Entitlement to drive page explains how to get one.

I recommend wearing comfortable trainers or flat shoes with a thin sole, as they give you a good feel for the pedals, especially the clutch pedal. Avoid flip-flops, sandals, heels and heavy boots. The Highway Code says your footwear mustn't stop you using the controls properly. If you're coming straight from work in work boots, that's fine, just bring a change of shoes with you.

Where will you pick me up from?

I can usually pick you up and drop you off at home, school, college or work, provided it's within the areas I cover: Peterborough, Bretton, Dogsthorpe, Eye, Gunthorpe, Hamptons, Longthorpe, Netherton, Paston, Ravensthorpe, Stanground, Walton, Werrington, The Ortons, The Deepings and surrounding areas. You can also be picked up from one place and dropped off at another, for example from college and then home.

If you live further out, in places like Oundle, Huntingdon or Whittlesey, you're still very welcome to learn with me. Pupils from these areas usually meet me in Peterborough and travel home from there. This means more of your lesson time is spent learning rather than travelling, and you'll get plenty of experience of the different types of roads and traffic conditions you'll meet when driving in Peterborough.

How many lessons will I need?

Everyone learns at a different pace, so there's no set number of lessons. It depends on how often you have lessons, how much private practice you get between them, and how quickly things click for you.

The LD System makes it clear where you are. Every driving skill is broken down into targets in your workbook and online learning hub, and you can mark each one off as you master it. You can see exactly what you've covered, what's left, and when you're ready for your test, so there are no surprises. Private practice with a family member or friend between lessons can also help you progress faster.

How often should I have driving lessons?

Regular lessons work best, rather than leaving long gaps between them. For many learners, one or two lessons a week work well, particularly when you're building new skills. Regular lessons help you keep what you've learned fresh and keep your progress moving forward. If you can also get private practice between lessons, that can make a real difference. If you'd like to learn more quickly, I also offer semi-intensive and intensive courses.

What happens if I need to cancel or move a lesson?

Please give me at least 48 hours' notice before the lesson's start time. You can call, text or WhatsApp me on 07778 894744. Lessons cancelled or rearranged with less than 48 hours' notice are normally charged in full.

The only exception is if you become unwell on the day of your lesson. If that happens, please contact me as early as possible that day.

I may also need to postpone a lesson if the weather or road conditions are unsafe. If that happens, I'll rearrange it with you as soon as possible.

Full details are in my Terms and Conditions.

Do you teach in an automatic car?

No, I only teach in a manual car, my Renault Clio Mk5 Play TCe 100. If you pass your test in a manual car, your licence lets you drive both manual and automatic cars. If you pass in an automatic, you can only drive automatics.

If you'd prefer to learn in an automatic, please call the LDC office free on 0800 400 777 and they can put you in touch with a local LDC instructor who teaches automatic.

Will you book my practical driving test for me?

You'll need to book your practical driving test yourself on GOV.UK. Only you, as the learner, can book, change, swap or cancel your driving test.

Before you book, please check with me, so we can agree when you're likely to be ready and choose a date and time when I'm available. Once you've booked, send me your test details straight away so I can check my availability and reserve the car for you.

My driving courses don't include the practical test fee. If you're planning a course with a test at the end, pass your theory test and book your practical test well in advance, as waiting times can be long.

Once your test is booked, you can only change the appointment twice. If you need to cancel or move it, you must give DVSA at least 10 full working days' notice (Monday to Saturday count, but Sundays and public holidays don't), or you'll normally have to pay for a new test. The deadline is shown in your booking confirmation email.

Can I use your car for my driving test?

Yes. Most of my pupils take their test in my car, as it's the car they know best, and it's dual-controlled and fully insured. Please let me know your test date and time as soon as you've booked it, so I can make sure the car is available.

Before the test, I recommend a 1-hour lesson to warm up and settle any nerves, then we'll drive to the test centre together.

You can choose whether I sit in the back of the car during your test, join you just for the debrief at the end, or don't come along at all. Pupils feel very differently about this. Some want me there so I can see exactly where they went wrong if it doesn't go to plan. Others feel it adds pressure, because if they make a mistake, they know the examiner has seen it and that I've seen it too. It's your test, so it's completely your decision.

For safety reasons, I may not allow my car to be used for the test if your driving isn't yet at a safe standard. If that's the case, I'll always talk it through with you well before the test date.

What happens if I'm unsuccessful on my driving test?

Don't worry. Lots of people are unsuccessful the first time, and it's not the end of the road. At the end of your test, the examiner will give you a debrief explaining your result. We can use their feedback to focus our next lessons on exactly what needs work.

It's your choice whether I sit in on your test, join you just for the debrief, or don't come along at all. If I'm there, it helps me see exactly what happened.

You can rebook your test straight away on GOV.UK, but your new test date must be at least 10 working days away. We'll keep your driving sharp in the meantime so you're ready.

Do you offer Pass Plus?

Yes, I'm registered to deliver Pass Plus. It's a course of at least 6 hours for new drivers, covering driving in town, in all weathers, on rural roads, at night, on dual carriageways and on motorways. These are situations you may not have met much, or at all, while learning. It's a great way to build your confidence in your first year of driving, and completing it may help you get a discount from some insurers, although not all insurers offer one.

For more details, see my Pass Plus page or call, text or WhatsApp me on 07778 894744.
